Theme: Isolation
You can't help but feel at least a little bit isolated when visiting Iceland. After all the island is over 100,000 square kilometers yet only boasts a population of a little over 300,000, with close to 200,000 of that living in Reykjavík. Outside the major centers there is literally just long stretches of empty highway and the occasional farm house. The lack of trees and vegetation, and the intense rocky landscape also contribute to the isolated feel.
