Day: 2
The day began with our first taste of sleeping in our rental car. One thing that became apparent however was that it got very cold at night in Iceland. Every 2 or 3 hours one of us would wake up to start the car to heat ourselves up. This would become a nightly trend when sleeping in the car.
We woke up early at first light and got a quick start on the day. We drove north of Selfoss to Geysir, and then to Gullfoss. We then headed south east on our way back to the ring road. We tried to take a shortcut, only to find the road we were traveling on blocked by a herd of sheep and a bunch of Icelanders riding horses.
We then backtracked our way to Selfoss to get back onto the ring road. We broke for lunch in a village called Vik which had a killer black sand beach. After lunch we continued our journey east. The terrain was starting to become more and more isolated with nothing but rock and long stretches of empty road. Next stop was Jökulsárlón, a massive lake at the bottom of a glacier that is filled with melting icebergs.
We continued on our journey north now, passed Hofn and for a brief stop in Stafafell. We decided to get a few more kilometers in before heading to bed so we trekked on further north. The weather started to get worse and worse at this point, with some intense winds and our first snow of the trip, which caused us to finally stop for the day.
